JCVD is a 2008 film directed and co-written by Mabrouk El Mechri, in which actor Jean-Claude Van Damme plays himself amidst the weight of withering fame, his addictions to drugs, and his failed attempt at being a father. When Van Damme, the normal, defeated guy, is found mixed up in a hold-up, the “muscles from Brussels” has to search for the hero inside himself. Critic Rob Nelson of Variety writes Van Damme’s performance “constitutes the headiest stretch of the beefy star’s career since, well, ever.”
The french-speaking, english sub-titled film, first screened at the Cannes Film Festival ’08, and then opened the Midnight Madness Screenings at the Toronto International Film Festivals in 2008. The film will be opening in the United States, in New York City, on November 7, 2008.
